Group Product Manager at Booking.com

About

Hailing from the Rainbow Nation (South Africa), I'm a UK based product leader. I’m currently a Group Product Manager at Booking.com where I lead the core booking and postbooking journeys across web and apps for the car rental vertical. I’ve spent the last 6 years leading and growing product managers and teams to deliver value and make decisions using data, A/B testing and user research.

I have a background in industrial design, ended up in product management by accident and never left. I have a deep interest in A/B testing, frequentist statistics, causal inference and probability. I have 10 years experience building products large and small across travel, retail and financial services with forays into premium packages and loyalty programmes.

Methodology

1.

Start with needs.

Understand the problem. Don't start without a set of requirements from both the business and your customers. Rigorously research, empathise with and articulate needs.

2.

Design is purposeful.

Define a goal. Stay focused in achieving it. Ensure it is something that will have a descernible, measurable impact- otherwise, at best you are making art, at worst, you are wasting money.

3.

Work with what you have.

Embrace constraints. Accept the financial, personnel, environmental, technological, and mechanical constraints that you have. Working with a well understood context produces usable achievable and feasible results - and it will make lead to a better product.

4.

Colloaborate.

Engage in discourse. You can't do this on your own. Be provocative and invite provocation to drive us on to new, emergent concepts and differentied solutions.

5.

Iterate, then iterate again.

Fail fast, test and learn, no assumptions! Iteration is the unit of currency for innovation - the more we iterate, the more we learn, the more effective the solution.
